Smart by Nature
LGSONS Workshop with Jon Young
Sunday, May 22, 2016
9:00AM - 4:30PM
For millions of years, the neurology of human beings was shaped in relationship to nature. In Richard Louv's book The Nature Principle, he says, "The future belongs to the nature smart". In our modern times, children are no longer given the support gain this neurological potential. As a result there are many nature deficit-disorders emerging among children today.
When facilitated effectively, nature connection routines can greatly contribute to positive sensory integration and increase health and happiness for children and their families. When we are connected to our capacity, and in alignment with our neurological potential through nature connection core routines, we are happier, more vital, able to listen deeply, have more empathy, develop initiative to be helpful to others, we feel more alive, more compassionate and we develop a quiet mind--the goal of mindfulness practice.
Effective nature connection facilitation is different than what most people today are used to. Almost all of us have grown up with educational, vocational and recreational experiences. The methods and processes of these common practices are different from connection processes. There are some simple models that can be understood through basic practices and discussions that can help to bring awareness to these techniques.
In this one day experiential workshop, Jon Young will share exercises that can be practiced at home and integrated easily into routines of our busy lives connecting with nature throughout the day, and along our usual routes and routines. Jon will share principles of nature connection and mentoring that will bring benefit to both parents and children, and will shed light on the importance of nature connection core routines.
While parents meet with Jon, children will spend the morning with their own specially trained facilitator assisted by Mountain School teachers. The children's formal program wraps up at noon when everyone will come together for lunch. Following lunch, adults will be back with Jon and our teachers will keep the children engaged until the day winds up at 4:30.
